Genre Research Blog - Romance
Hey guys! It’s Lindsay, and this is the research my group and I did for the romance movie genre:
Genre Research: Romance
CAMS
Some Cams that are commonly used in the romance genre are close-ups, two-shots, and medium shots. The close-up conveys a character's emotions and is mostly seen when a character is heartbroken or in shock. The two shot is between two characters portraying how they feel about each other and is seen mainly with the two main leads. Lastly, the medium shot is used to show the character's body language and facial expressions when around others or in a certain situation.
CLAMPS
Some Clamps that are commonly used in the romance genre are flowers, used as a prop, and costumes. The use of flowers as a prop is widely used to symbolize a character's love for another character. It emphasizes their romantic feelings as gifting flowers is seen as a romantic gesture. Costumes are usually casual clothing because characters are mainly teenagers and are portrayed wearing casual clothes, such as jeans and t-shirts.
EDITING
Some editing that is commonly used in the romance genre are fade in's and outs and slipt screens. Fade in/outs are usually seen when a character goes to bed and wakes up the next morning. Slipt screens are mainly used when the two main characters meet for the first time to showcase both their reactions at the same time, in the same moment.
Common SOUND
Some sound that is commonly used in the romance genre are voiceovers and ambient sounds. Voiceovers are usually the main female character narrating throughout the film expressing how she feels towards the love interest. Ambient sounds, depending on the plot, could be office noises or noises in a school hallway as the character(s) moves through the scene.
Some example films would be "The Kissing Booth," "Love at First Sight," and "To All The Boys I've Loved Before. These three films have a good amount of the elements mentioned that help make the film what it is! These films are very engaging for their audience.
Elements of this genre that I like and would use would be voiceovers and ambient sounds. This would enhance my film and make it more engaging for the audience. Elements that I don't like would be the use of flowers as a prop as it doesn't fit the theme of my pitch.
