Movie Conventions Research: Murder Mystery

Hey guys! It’s Lindsay with my last movie conventions blog on the film: Murder Mystery.

Movie Conventions Research: Murder Mystery                                                                                                                                                                                                What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

This movie highly focuses on costumes for the different roles the actors play. For example, the movie opens with a cop in full costume, clearly showing that the character is part of the police force. Also, the film makes use of dim lighting to create suspense and add tension to the mood. My group agreed to use all of these elements in the final task film.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?

I liked how the movie used a contrast in lighting. For example, the editors used dim lighting with highlights on certain characters or objects for the mysterious scenes to add to the suspense. However, they made use of bright lighting during the scenes where the characters were discussing the mystery, to create divergence. I like how this alters the mood of the film, allowing the audience to feel as if they are immersed in the film and experiencing it firsthand.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?

I did not like the use of frequent jump cuts. This is because they quickly change the scene and do not allow the audience to fully process what is happening. Also, the use of ambient sound, while it did make the film feel more realistic, it also made the film appear to be slightly chaotic, as there were so many conversations and random noises happening at once.
